Mark Duperon, 32, said he was looking for a relative when he stumbled upon the body of a young girl who had been slashed down the torso. He said she looked to be around 8 to 10 years old.

The bathrooms at the massive center, which stretches several city blocks, overflowed with human waste. The stench of urine, feces and rotting flesh was overpowering.

It's a poor city. And those who were trapped and not able to evacuate were among the poorest. While some of the looters went after guns and electronic equipment, a good number were taking food, water, ice and diapers.

The longer they were stranded without food, water and electricity in the 90 degree-plus heat, the more desperate their faces.

The description of the Superdome, where thousands were being sheltered, sounded like levels of hell, with dead bodies and floors slick from feces and urine.

The water still running through the streets was contaminated from the rotting corpses that public health officials couldn't collect."
