China contains 20% of global population but only 7% of available fresh water. 54% of the main rivers contain water unfit for human consumption (Cho,R,2011, “How China is dealing with its water crisis“, State of the Planet, Columbia University Earth Institute News, http://blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2011/05/05/how-china-is-dealing-with-its-water-crisis).
A World Bank report on China's water situation foresees "catastrophic consequences for future generations" unless water use and supply can quickly be brought back into balance (Brown,L2013, “The real threat to our future is peak water”, The Guardian, 6 July 2013).
According to the 2017 report, Global Trends: Paradox of Progress (US National Intelligence Council, Washington DC) “more than 30 countries—nearly half of them in the Middle East—will experience extremely high water stress by 2035, increasing economic, social, and political tensions”"
