If you look back 3-4 years, one of the reasons why Scott suspected this basin would have hydrocarbons is that a lot of the wells the are drilled for water could not be used for drinking water as the locals reported that it tasked oily. So i don't think that water being there is a surprise. It just no usable (also very deep for a water well)
