"how simple and robust...". Can't agree more. I was always told "KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid". So CWE's simple idea is easier to install and should be easier to fix etc. and more efficient as less moving parts. More complexity you would assume is less efficient due to mechanical losses and is harder to deploy and maintain etc.
I would have assumed that the jackup barge is purely a test rig as they make mention of the wave device being anchored between two wind turbines bases but looking up the Wavestar images on google it seems the array isn't as described. The main concepts primarily seems to be long jackup barges or arrays in a star shape from the wind turbine. I think this sort of device has application on existing Jetties around the world. If they can be retrofitted under a wharf in ports or on fishing jetties like Huntington Beach Pier, CA they maybe viewed more as a supplemental energy generator.
I think it's good for CWE as they wave energy herd will thin out and hopefully what remains is the pick of the bunch. A case of natural selection. That said some of the best tech doesn't always make it. It just comes down to how it's marketed to the consumer i.e. VHS v BETA or HDDVD vs BLURAY..... watch "how we got to now" to see many more successful failures...
Hopefully CWE stays at the forefront and will be a great success...
