As the options have been exercised, payment is due to the company now, not in 3 years time. Due to the cute arrangement he has with BRM, it seems as though he doesn't have to repay BRM until he actually sells the shares issued following the exercise of the option. The only reason I can think of for exercising early is that he needs the cash ie the difference between the exercise price and the current market price.
