You could hold a long position which works with a high timeframe trend following strategy, and take short trades in lower time frame counter trend pull backs - or mean reversion trades in either direction during a sideways period. The idea is twofold - maximize potential profits but more importantly to reduce position volatility which leads to less emotional decision making. This is one form of hedging risk.
