I always keep an eye on the seasonality but the end of year is much more special...
Hedge Funds short and cover almost all year long but they have to show great results (profits) at the end of year.
For this reason they let stocks run because it generates more profits than shorting (if they don't suspect any bad news, which usually they get beforehand).
If there are in December good news about a stock they will let it continue its run, otherwise they take profits.
In January they let it run again just to restart their shorting and convering game till the beginning of October
