Intel had turned the corner with Optane and was starting to profit from it - they are using it as a persistent memory adjacent to DRAM - essentially as a kind of Storage Class Memory (although Optane isn't as fast as those wanting SCM need it to be)
3D-Xpoint from Micron side of the JV wasn't.
Micron owned the fab and decided to sell out. Intel could continue to make Optane elsewhere.
