That is the physical size of all the cells connected together as each bit (cell) requires a transistor and resistor. The way it is interconnected is how it reduces the package size. With 8bits interconnected it forms 1 byte or 8 bits of information. the selector is what is used to address each bit (cell = 1 or 0) to change state.
