Aren't MUFG the one's lending out the stock, not the one's borrowing?
They buy up, lend to short sellers and collect fees from them.
It makes sense, particularly for big institutions. They can continue to buy more while the people they lend to are selling and keeping the SP level/down. They make good money in fees which helps to offset losses if the SP goes down and stays down. If the SP goes up, it's the short sellers which lose, the institutional lenders do well like the rest of the shareholders.
