OK so let me try and put it even more simply.

Since 1995 NATO has been expanding towards Russia, despite promises in 1989/90 that it would not expand "not one inch Eastwards".

In 2008 the US announced that it would admit Georgia and Ukraine into NATO (on Russia's border and the traditional route through which Russia has been attacked for centuries). So Putin warned in 2008, don't expand NATO to Ukraine etc because its too much of a threat to our security and we wont allow it. (Also Many US diplomats and including the current Director of the CIA warned at the time that this would provoke a war with Russia). But NATO laughed at Putin (see the videos of John McCain (there was never a war he didn't want to pick and fight)).

2014 America bankrolled and orchestrated a coup to overthrow the democratically elected president of Ukraine and replace it with a proxy US Govt (see video of Victoria Nuland boasting that the US spent over $5B to achieve that result; listen to the leaked phone call of Nuland deciding who would be the next PM of Ukraine after the democratically elected govt was overthrown; also the video of Vic Nuland handing out muffins to the protesters encouraging the uprising (Just imagine a Russian diplomat doing the same in Washington on Jan 6, America would have gone to war with Russia immediately) )

Crimea is home to Russia's strategically vital naval port of Sevastapol. The US wants to admit Ukraine and Georgia into NATO because the encirclement of Russia will be complete and most importantly the takeover of Crimea (and esp Sevastapol) will turn the Black Sea into a NATO Lake (something which America has been boasting about since 2008).

So now you need to ask yourself, if Russia did the same to the USA (admitting Mexico/Canada/Hawaii as members of Russia's military alliance, flooding those countries with hostile armies, nuclear weapons. bio weapons, and most importantly, orchestrating a coup in Hawaii so that the new rebel Govt would kick the USA out of Pearl Harbour and turn it into a Russian Naval base, what do you think America would do? I tell you what they would do. They wouldn't for one minute utter the words "Mexico/Canada/Hawaii have the "sovereign right" to host whatever Armies/Nuclear Weapons/Bio-weapons, they like on the USA Boarders and that Hawaii has the sovereign right turn over Pearl harbor to Russia". Noway, instead the USA would nuke Russia immediately without any hesitation.

And this is the clincher. If the USA knew that that's the way the USA would react and the USA knew that Russia has a huge nuclear arsenal then the USA also knew that its actions would seriously risk WW3 and that WW3 would likely turn into a nuclear war. But the USA took that risk anyway because its a greedy imperialist warmonger and as a consequence they have risked the lives of billions of people on this planet and ecological destruction which will take millennia to repair.

So you see why the USA is to blame for the fix we are in. Honestly, its not rocket science.
