    It's both.

    So-called "works" will only be helpful to the recipient if they're coming from a liberated person.

    Whilst uninspired works won't be much help to the recipient, they can help the doer of such deeds. So if you work for a charity, it can help get you out of a self-absorbed state. It can move you in the right direction, generally speaking. Example: by giving money away to the needy, it requires a relinquishing of attachment to your own wealth. Giving everything away (as Jesus once suggested to a disciple) is a big show of faith. Of course, if you give everything away and you do it in hope of a reward in heaven, well... forget it. It doesn't work like that.
