I think the English wanted to maintain control of their own country and keep their Sovereign rights which would most definitely have been under threat had they have voted to stay.
Would be a bit like Australia being ruled from Japan given that the Poms fought the Germans for their freedom and would have been ruled by the EU.
Good on the Poms for taking this really momentous step.
