the comparison is not all that far-fetched. but a massacre on whatever scale is not a pogrom. where a bunch of ruffians stir up their mates & swoop down on the ghetto (another term that's been adopted into the vocabulary) to smash up their place of worship, desecrate the torah, kill a few or whatever else turns them on, that's a pogrom.

you want to look at it from their point of view, seek some sort of justification? well, it's not such a bad way to break the boredom, feel powerful, important, self-satisfied for a day.

afterwards, things return to normal, until the next time. the spontaneous lynching of blacks in the deep south is to my mind, the closest valid comparison.

there too, no amount of wishful nostalgia will bring back the past.
