I believe the banks can only afford so many write downs and from what i have read about the cdo's etc then these maybe a bigger cause of concern. Also if they liquidate then I expect that they may only get 50% of the book value in this market which would be at this time to much for them to wear with all of the other problems so yes I do believe that an extension is in their best interest
