Built infrastructure, introduced Western government, built schools, built hospitals, built roads, rail, built ports, navigated rivers, mapped the bloody place while dying in their thousands from alsorts of diseases, developed international markets, dug mines, vaccinated their kids... etc... etc...
Then gave "Africa" independence and they've never been the same since.
