DRC license review leak prompts another plea for confidence

A leaked early draft of recommendations by the Democratic Republic of Congo Commission on mining license review has prompted another official declaration, calling for confidence in DRC mining and mining investment.

Moise Katumbi, the governor of the DRC's mineral-rich Katanga province, Monday issued a declaration criticizing the non-official leak from the Commission, and its "very negative impact on the market capitalization of many of the mining companies active in Katanga province."

He continued: "I would like to reiterate that responsible mining companies which have invested in Katanga or which are about to invest, are very welcome in my province."

Saying over $2 billion had been raised on international stock markets for the development of mining projects in the DRC and restoration of mines "abandoned for lack of investment in the preceding period of uncertainty," Governor Katumbi said he would do everything he could to "promote a positive investment climate for responsible mining companies which operate according to internationally recognized standards and who undertake social programs which have a positive impact on the communities located in the region of their activities."

Stressing that the current investment climate had "taken several years to establish", the governor urged mining companies to continue investment programs in spite of the rumors.
