I believe from my research, the bond held for rehabilitating the land seems to be some what equivalent to what it should cost to restore the site. There’s a calculation process around it I believe. I’ve heard some mine sites have estimated rehabilitation costs at $40million to end up getting stung with a bill in the $100’s of millions. Businesses that don’t comply to the rehabilitation requirements not only face losing their bond they can also be the subject to fines from EPA. It’d be kind of interesting to know from an independent assessor what it would cost to restore the mine because if that cost is a lot greater than what we may think, and a decision not to mine is made, well this may present an issue down the track.
