10c, thanks for the lead. For those also interested I checked Wikipedia and found that the euro replaced the ECU or European Currency Unit on a 1 EUR = 1 ECU basis in 1999. The ECU itself goes back to 1979 when it replaced the European Unit of Account which was created in 1975, also at 1 ECU = 1 EUoA. My recollection of the 2002 date was when physical euro currency was introduced - I remember cos I happened to be in Europe about a month after launch and already people were refusing to accept the former currencies (I had some deutschmarks from a previous trip that I wanted to get rid of - in the end I had to go to a bank while there to exchange them).
Therefore the data on IC, which actually goes back to January 1976 for any euro currency pair, must represent all 3 forms of the common european currency.
