    nice thinking and how about a tub of water that contains 2 metric cubes of water in volume. Assuming 1 equals 1 as to specific gravity of water then if your sample is halfway down on a 2 thou litre tub ,does that mean 1 tonne of water is above the sample in waterweight(1 litre = 1 kilo).

    as for the emmerson reply dammn damn dam, thats what the test is good for....Earth Dams.

    How does depth equal weight when it comes to a shallow immersion compared to a deep immersion and should a surcharge weight have a depth in case it imparts a heavier than expected load on a sample..?
