Large Hadron Collider Restart Pushed Back, Earth Safe Another Month
Categories: Space Tech

The world's largest particle accelerator will be restarted in October instead of September, ZDNet reports, in another rescheduling since the Large Hadron Collider went offline last September due to extensive hardware failure.
An internal schedule set in February to restart the experiment has been pushed back by two or three weeks, but the restart will still happen this fall. That's according to James Gillies, Cern's head of communications, in the article. "The situation is a retreat from February... We had aimed for the end of September, but we're now looking at somewhere in October."
The restart date has already moved at least three times, with April, the "end of summer," and September being given at various points since the LHC's hardware incident. (And by the way, the earth-being-safe bit is a joke, for those who still haven't read up on it.) The damage to the particle accelerator was due to a liquid helium leak caused by an electrical fault.
