Totally agree. They should base tax returns / tax rates on the family unit rather than the individual. Then cut out all the benefits for x y and z. It would be fairer. Simpler. And reduce complicated (but legitimate) tax minimisation methods like family trusts, etc.
Welfare should be the safety net in our society. It should not be a mechanism for lifestyle equalisation.
