Arithmetic and algebra although related are not the same thing. You need arithmetic to solve an algebraic equation, but you can do arithmetic without algebra.
FWIW, algebra and calculus are not the same thing either. I recall a Maths 2 test from Uni, where I got something like 43/45 for the algebra section, but only 26/45 for the calculus bit.
