For mine....I have no doubt the ref chose to give the penalty for reasons other than simply to enforce the rules.
He was well aware that the game was in its closing seconds.
He would have been well aware that any call given then would have given one team a tremendous advantage
I cannot see how...as a human being with those awarenesses in place.... that with the very first opportunty to award a call...as you said..that it is done and with the pointing happened so quickly on a "foul" all would consider at least somewhat dubious....
- one can escape the conclusion that other forces were at work
