As a Liberal voter I don't care a tinker's cuss who does what in other parties. The system, if it works (and it mostly does) will ultimately expose those charlatans who are on the take.
But I want my political party to be completely above reproach and if anything, to err on the side of conservativeness when enjoying the fruits of public office and especially when accessing public coffers. That way, the opponents can have no basis for defending the indefensible on their side.
And - even as a Liberal Party supporter - I find the actions of Bishop which have come into the public glare to be nothing close to conservative. In fact, any objective observer of this situation would be of the view that this is nothing other than egregious largess, and the fact that Bishop is so "graciously" paying it back does little to mitigate the offensive nature of the incident.
What is required here is zero tolerance, and not the race-to-the-bottom attitude of "well, the other guys also do this sort of stuff, so..."
The only way ethical standards are maintained is when breaches of them aren't justified by referencing the lesser standards of others. For that is the slippery slope to banana republicanism.
If the Liberal Party is compromised by this matter, the person causing the compromised position must be disengaged.
Simple.
In the full interests of the preservation of standards.
Spoken as a conservative-leaning, Liberal Party supporter.
