The sentiment is fine but it will never pass a referendum because we will never agree on a model. I for one will NEVER agree with a popularly elected President. This fiasco in the US should disabuse anyone of that idea.
A president nominated by the HOR is just a GG in drag. My preference for someone elected by a college of "eminent people" would be too elitist for the majority.
As it is, the Poms pay for the Queen, we get her free.
