Christians (well some of them) justify the Crusades on the grounds that it was necessary to reclaim territory lost in previous Muslim campaigns.
Whether or not Jesus's sword remark applies to all circumstances is debatable. For example if someone came at your child with the sword in my opinion you should protect your child with whatever you have at your disposal or just watch your child being hacked to pieces.
