Since the extension is pretty much a done deal, I would say the late buying is related to the closure of short positions. Hedge funds made an absolute mint over the last few weeks pushing the price lower each and every time it appeared like it could move. If this deal goes through over the weekend they would be returning a chunk of it since the price would be moving up in the short term.
I believe they rather await the spike north and then start their games all over again.
