About 15 years ago I met someone who worked on the Westgate Bridge. He told me that prior to the collapse workers noticed that the colour of the steel changed whitish which indicated that it was under extreme stress. I did not question him farther, but obviously he survived so maybe he took a sickie. He must have been around 20 at the time; walking off the job for safety concerns might have saved his life.
