I have worked for two American companies and have visited the States on two occasions and, apart from Mexicans workers at the LA airport, I didn't have problems understanding their lingo, except for those coming from the Deep South. And they certainly did not speak the Queen's English.

Fundamentalist Christianity mainly exists in parts of the Deep South. I don't recollect meeting any in LA, apart from the airport. But my immediate boss in LA came from a country south of Mexico, and apart from the fact that English was not his first language (and he was crook), he had a speech impediment .
