At Byron Bay the whaling attracted huge crowds. They lined the fence watching operations. My favorite trick was to walk out and sit on part of a whale and eat an apple. Sometimes it was enough to make someone in the crowd spew. There were often huge crowds. The car park was across the road with room for around a hundred cars and it often filled. There used to be special trains from Casino and Murwillumbah on a Sunday as well. It was a great tourism "earner" for the town. It was also possible to watch the whales being caught from the headlands at Ballina, Lennox Head and the lighthouse hill at Byron Bay.
