I am working as Technical Manager in Mineral Processing Industry last 25 years with professional and academic degrees. I believe I have sufficient knowledge of Hydrometallurgical Leaching Process for Li and I would like to share my experience with you.
LIT has applying a hydrometallurgical process, "The Sileach Process", for the recovery of lithium from spodumene. Sileach technology has demonstrated lithium extractions from alpha-spodumene. This technology is the best hydrometallurgical process in current environment.
Key features of the Sileach™ hydrometallurgical process include:
Universal leaching process for Li ores such as spodumene, micas, jadarite and clays
Low energy, no roasting required
Sileach™ represents a mine-gate-to-consumer solution. A hydrometallurgical process ideally suited to the processing of spodumene, micas and off-specification lithium mineral concentrates, it produces high-purity lithium chemicals (hydroxide or carbonate) at a significant cost advantage compared to existing production. Sileach™ has inherent advantages over processes involving roasting and leaching in that: processing occurs at atmospheric pressure; energy input is significantly lower; the carbon footprint is small; recovery from most lithium minerals is high, and extensive by-product credits are possible.
What a Great Results:
“Operations undertaken at ANSTO Minerals (a division of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) have demonstrated proof-of-concept production of high-purity lithium carbonate from spodumene process solutions.
The lithium carbonate feed solutions were produced by Lithium Australia’s Sileach™ pilot plant, processing of Pilgangoora spodumene concentrates. The concentrate grades processed were intentionally selected to have a grade lower than commercial concentrate grades, in this case 3.4%% Li2O to demonstrate the flexibility of Sileach™ in processing a wide range of materials, including off-specification spodumene concentrates. The solutions generated by digesting spodumene contain approximately 2.4% Si, 1.2% Al and 0.2% Li.
These concentrations provide an opportunity to recover components, other than lithium, as by-products. This opportunity is not available with conventional processing: low cost, Low temperature / atmospheric pressure, Rapid reaction times."
