SKM announced it would not uphold it's recycling contract with local councils. Bigger picture, China, Indonesia have banned imports on recyclables because it was full of non-recoverable materials. Currently recyclable products are being stockpiled around the country but looks like a lot of it is just going to go off to landfill where it can rot and leach out contamination into the landscape for next few hundred thousand if not million years.
So who is to blame for this debacle? Is it the lazy consumer that contaminates the recyclable stream? Or is it the Government who cannot implement a viable waste management strategy or incentivise investment into waste recovery from private sectors? Or is it the players in the private sector who have no expertise or competence in resource recovery technologies? Why is something that seems quite simple, too hard for this country? How are we going to deal with complex challenges if we cannot even effectively manage our own consumeristic waste products?
