I wonder whether Telstra will go nuclear on the government? All Telstra has to do is demerge the company up into 3 new companies. A mobile company with all the existing Telstra customers both mobile and fixed line. An IT/media company consisting of Foxtel and Sensis. And lastly a company consisting only of the copper fixed line network and any other legacy problems. The copper company will only have wholesale customers, the largest being the new mobile company. Also load up the copper company with as much debt as possible so that it can barely meet network maintenance costs and will be lucky to survive 10 years as an operating entity without government assistance. Watch the government then run around like a headless chook as it contemplates what to do about the loss of thousands of high paying union jobs in regional areas. If only old Sol was still around, Rudd might have come to regret giving Conroy a blank cheque to create the NBN monster, not to mention giving Rupert Murdoch a free meal with Foxtel and further entrenching media concentration in Australia.
