With respect to your mates advice, Riverbed does not 'compress' traffic, it accelerates it using a number of techniques. The reason why Riverbed still thrives today and why i believe this technology will do the same is because regardless how much bandwidth you have you will never get rid of the 'latency' which is is a term used to measure the time it takes for traffic to travel from point a to point b.
This technology absolutely has relevance in today's and future market.
