This has been discussed quite often in the past year. Especially thanks to the (either goldcorp or barrick, i forget) CEO, who said that gold producers should stop kidding themselves by downplaying their total costs of gold production. He stated that real costs would be in the vicinity of 1200+ for most gold producers and if companies dont start being honest about what its costing them to get gold out of the ground, then they are setting themselves up for opportunistic government taxes down the road.
Looks like this is going to start to change and end up being reflected in the price of gold down the line.
