Why get a gaming laptop at all? If you want to play a game that requires reflexes and accurate input , you will want a larger monitor and separate keyboard anyway. You would be better served by a separate desktop for gaming and a cheap laptop for work/study at any price point.
That laptop you described is 5 years old and will noticeably struggle with a modern demanding game now.

I've been using Asus ROG laptops for around 10 years. Solid product and well built, first one lasted 7 years current ones is now 3 years old and not had a single issue. No issues playing stuff like Battlefield 1, War Thunder or Assetto Corsa connected to a 34 inch UHD screen at max settings.
In terms of why have a gaming laptop, can still travel with it, friends still run lan events and portability within the house to connect to the tv at times as required. Much better than lugging a desktop around.
