the afr.com site is quite up to date but as you remarked some of the interesting stuff are for subscribers only.
Most of the "Market Wrap" section is free, gives a nice run down of what's going on at the market place.
Otherwise I look at egoli, smh and news.com.au
In terms of company reports, AOT/webiress does a good job of releasing them as they receive them.
