We should have phased them in with nuclear 20 years ago, until we sorted out energy storage issues for a 24-hour cycle. I believe it's too late now for nuclear, because by the time they are built their tech won't be cost-competitive. Batteries are great for grid stabilisation now, until gas can kick in, as we rethink what an electricity grid is and how it should operate.

In the next ten years I suspect there will be a breakthrough in storage, much like the way computer chips massively increased computing capacity over a decade. That will be the gamechanger.

large, centralized electricity generation is still required for heavy industry

aluminium reduction, for instance, requires the electricity generation of a power station......and Australia has one of the largest Bauxite reserves in the world

so I would not exclude nuclear just yet
