1. There is a difference between "contact" and "trying to contact"
2. Contact with Gilard is a lot different to being fobbed off by one of her staff.
The accounts by The Australian and Pickering are not mutaually exclusive of the facts. Both can be true and I have no reason to disbelieve either.
