Thanks, Moloch, for a great post and "status report", on where things really stand.
The hints that have come out all support your contention that the fine flake graphite to be supplied to Chinalco will be priced somewhat above the price of the petroleum coke which it replaces. And that sits well with other recent data. On 14 March, Industrial Minerals Data reported:
"finer mesh equivalents such as flake, 94-97% C, -100 mesh, FCL, CIF, Europe have been reported as low as $850/tonne."
Current mid-range prices for petroleum coke are around $550 per tonne, so Chinalco will probably be paying a significant premium over that - and getting a premium product in return.
The net of this is that the price paid by Chinalco, even with this very large order, is likely to be very close to the current price for good-quality fine flake graphite. SYR are neither giving the stuff away, nor providing a bottom-of-the-market product.
