Reading about the Raspadskaya mine disaster that happened in Russia earlier this year brings a sobering perspective to the situation. In the Russian mine disaster, 3 1/2 hours after the fist blast, came a second much bigger blast killing all 20 rescue workers.
The general consensus from around the world seems to be that you flush out the methane with fresh air and then go in. In the PRC mine, the ventilation system is half busted from the blast. They can not flush it out.
The now half ventilated shaft is probably a more dangerous mixture than before they started pumping air into it. The introduction of more air can also cause hot spots to flare up. The mine very much could explode.
