there'd be enormous stresses up there at a guess

imagine if you were trying to hold on to a blade that long in 50km of wind

Comparing that to a plane prop made of wood and rotating at 2 thousand rpm dragging a couple of tonnes of dead weight around kinds puts some perspective on it?

Perhaps around the base might be under most stress, but it's also the most mass.
