so you're saying that bhp would refrain from bidding on anything simply because grades aren't high enough and/or it's not a tier 1 mine? (i know you didn't say that last bit but there is some sort of inference there seeing you told me to do some research).
by the way what are the specific requirements for tier 1?
i think bhp like any company would assess all possible purchases on whether they could get a good return for their outlay.
in addition they might also consider intangibles such as having a competitor like minmetals who might be able to engineer lower copper prices from ph affecting their profits from olympic dam.
