Harry I never stepped foot in East Timor in my life but I work in the oil industry and know something about the ways projects are financed and run and who gets what. Hence I can try to debunk all the oil conspiracies as its a slur on my industry - statements like "Iraq war was an oil grab" and "no-one cares about Congo or Somalia because there is no oil" and "East Timor was about oil". These are all totally absurd to me despite being common currency.
Why is it you think it was about oil? You are in good company as plenty of people believe this and Ive seen the photos of graffit in Dilli saying its about oil. Is it a convenient explanation for a countries troubles. So what is the origin of this myth? I am genuinely curious.
