Do you think that the world would have been a safer place with the Americans or without them? Certainly, Europe would have been united by ruled by a facist Germany. Australia and most of Asia would have been dominated by a cruel Japanese power.
Economic growth would not have been powered by America for much of the 20th century. Technology advances probably would not have occurred at the pace they did without America.
However, it is probably a good thing for the world that it not be so reliant on the American now, because it spreads the risk instead of centralising it in one country. Ultimately it might be better for America as well. With the state of the US economy and trade deficits, the $US should be trading much lower than it currently is, and that would provide stimulation to America to pull it out of recession quicker.
