If the USD collapses then all fait currencies collapse. All international trade will cease and mines in many countries nationalised.

In the short term following a collapse we are back to barter, so you need food and water first and then gold and silver, the market will set the gold and silver price IMO. There will be no paper substitute in the period immediately following a collapse. The collapse of the Soviet Union probably is the best model IMO. Gold and silver will give you the ability to buy income producing assets.
