I'm with Russ on this point: it's a short-term payout for holders to trade a few. I'm actually fully committed to holding the 'main' pile with every last $ I've got - I pay for the trader lots by mortgaging the cat, living on cat food myself, until such time as I can swing a quick profit.
Effectively it's day-trading on the side, and whatever one says about day-traders, we certainly add liquidity. I don't know any long-term holder's in any stock who, when they decide to 'take profit', wouldn't accept a day-traders $ when they press the 'sell' button.
