It was the first time that Australia got to prove itself as it's own country in it's own right. It's not about glorifying anything.
Huge sacrifices were made relative to per capita at a time when a nation was trying to grow, thats why it's significant to australia.
The horror of how the war played out as it was the first time that modern weapons were used on the battle field in a time before modern tactics had been developed. Not until Sir John Monash devised a way of combining Air power, Artillery and Infantry movement in precise unison not only to help win battles, but to prevent the tragic waste of life that trench warfare caused.
