What was the Great War all about anyway? I know about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand at Sarejevo. It seems to me that if countries want to go to war then any excuse will do but if they don't want to fight then no provocation is enough. Was the whole thing about Germany becoming a threat commercially and as a sea power to Britain and therefore had to be smacked down? I doubt that we are ever told the real reasons for any war, and even after the fighting has stopped the real reasons aren't revealed as governments don't want the populace to become cynical, they might need to spin the same line again in future. Who knows?
